Wheeee… work is killing me

releasing my theme? mmmm… I never really thought to it as a “theme”, but more as “my website design”, even if it’s true that it’s based on a popular WP theme.
I know I’d benefit of links back and publicity by giving it away, but I’d have to deal also with an increasing number of websites that look the same as mine.

I already received a bunch of emails and requests to publish my theme or my source-code. And I already published some tutorials and some code for the JS used on this site.
WP is free, Hemingway is free, my JS (that is actually the only thing I added) is available for free on this site.
This is really everything you need (if you know WP a little) to make exactly the same things I did. All you need to add is a few hours of your time and some creativity.

Luke (2 comments above) is just 16, but using my JS and adding his own creativity he’s doing some great work. He should be taken as an example.

Btw, designing this website (and getting featured on all the galleries for the first time) has a special meaning for me. I run this website since 1999, and always pushed it further to improve my skills.
I really wish to keep this MY OWN website and I’d hate to see other sites using the same theme.

I hope you get to understand my point of view.

Please dont’ take my previous comment as arrogant or that I don’t want to share things with the community. I share what I feel like sharing and I did it from the first I published this site, posting the JS and all the tricks behind it.

But I worked hard and spent days and weeks studying WordPress Codex and finding the right design and layout. Finally I published this site in June and was really excited about it. The recognition I’m getting from design commuties just fills my heart and pays me back for the last 8 years spent learning web design.

Now I believe it’s still too soon to give my work away. I still want to enjoy it a few months. And want it to be unique.

Maybe I’ll release something when I’ll have the time to design a better theme or to chenge this one, to keep my own site always a step ahead

As long as you don’t make a clone of my “theme” or of my site, you have my permission (maybe a credit, uh?).
I hope I made the point clear enough in my previous comments.

Maybe I’m just a dreamer, but I strongly believe that if everybody puts passion and motivation and turns inspiration into new, fresh creativity, this will be the real progress for us all.

Copying does not produce anything new. It kills progress and decreases the value of websites. If they all look the same, no one will stand out.

I’ll give it up….. do what you want.

I already stated that Hemingway is free, what is not free is my customization of Hemingway.
Anyway I are right, I can’t do nothing. Apart getting frustrated.

I really don’t want to push this thing any further. I just want to live peacefully and run my small personal blog, as everybody out there does. I’ m starting to feel some hostility against me….

First, without diving into legal caveats or long explanations about licenses and copyright, I changed my footer.
As already said, all I want to do is to keep the value of my ideas (I dont’ even need to copyright them ).

Everything published on this site is CC licensed, as it’s always been. So you can do what you want with my JS and my tutorial, as long as you credit me.

For the rest, I already said that you can do whatever you like.
If you make something that really looks the same as Jek2k.com, you know, I won’t be that happy.
But my frustration doesn’t mean you cannot do it.
This is the point: I don’t want to ever suit nobody for copying or taking away parts of my work. And I don’t want to put strong copyrights to protect my work.
The footer was made just to keep fools away and avoid that everybody started making copies… You know, if you start by saying “everything is free” they will also take the logo and my girlfriend’s portrait, saying that they made ‘em hahahahaha).

All I’ve always been talking about is good old common sense, a little bit of respect and a positive behaviour.

I have to admit that I’m not that good at keeping a positive behaviour on this topic, because I put so much energy in what I do, that I really feel robbed when I see my ideas taken and used elsewhere.

I also believe that you didn’t need to find license and copyright excuses.
You could just ask: “If you don’t want me to make a copy of your so called theme, can you help developing a brand new theme, so we can put our skills together and share the result with the community?”
That would have sound better and my answer would have been radically different.

Hope you will understand me finally so we can put an end to this .
